Using Microsoft Server 2000 as a Workstation

Q. Will Maxxtraxx run on a Server 2000 machine as a workstation?

Answer:

Yes, you can use a computer running Server 2000 operating system as a workstation. However, it will most likely run slowly regardless of the amount of RAM installed. Also, there is a file that needs to be run that is located in the Scott Systems\MaxxTraxxx Pro\ folder called MDAC.exe to configure the computer to run properly with MaxxTraxx.

Running under Windows Firewall

Q. I want to have Windows firewall on while running Maxxtraxx on my network, is that possible?

Answer:

Note: If you are on a LAN (or behind a router), the windows firewall is pretty much redundant. Enabling the MS Firewall on computers that are part of a LAN does not add any significant security. The Window Firewall is really only useful if they're plugged directly into their internet modem and not using a router. If you still want to turn Windows firewall on while running Maxxtraxx please do the following steps.

-DISABLE or turn OFF the Windows Firewall.
-In addition to Mxtrxpro.exe, add the following .exe's to the exclusion list in the Windows Firewall.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Binn\sqlservr.exe
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\ssmsee.exe
-Add Port 1433 to the Exceptions list as TCP and add Sqlserver.exe from C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Binn
-Open MaxxTraxx with the Firewall OFF or DISABLED.
-With MaxxTraxx OPEN(minimized on the taskbar) re-enable the Windows Firewall.
MaxxTraxx should now start fine with the Firewall enabled.

MaxxTraxx local Backup Problems with Mapped Drive: Windows 8

Q. I'm trying to set up my automated backups in MaxxTraxx, and I've mapped a drive that I can see in my Explorer, but when I'm setting up the backup, MaxxTraxx doesn't see the mapped drive. My server is Windows 8.

Answer:

This is a known problem with Windows 8, and there is a solution. It requires that you edit your Windows Registry. This is a very sensitive area of your Operating System. If you are not careful and accidentally make a wrong entry, it could affect how Windows operates. So unless you are confident in your abilities, you may want a qualified tech to do this fix for you. But here are the steps for those of you who wish to do the fix themselves.

How to make Windows 8 installer browse or some applications (MaxxTraxx) see network Mapped Drives

1 - run regedit or regedt32
2 - locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/System
3 - create a new DWORD entry with the name EnableLinkedConnections and value 1.
4 - restart your computer
5 - now you can see and use network drives with these installers or applications.

Then create a MaxxBack folder, on the target workstation, share it and give "Everyone" full read, write permissions in both the Sharing Tab and the Security Tab. Then go back to the server and Map that drive to a drive letter and then set MaxxTraxx to copy to that drive letter.

Multiple Printers

Q. Can MaxxTraxx print to different printers or just the one set as default?

Answer:

MaxxTraxx can print to any printer available to that workstation from its Windows setup. Go into Setups, then This Workstation, then into Printing And Miscellaneous Info. On the left choose the blue link for Printer Setup. From there you will see the variety of print jobs available in MaxxTraxx and be able assign them to print to any printer that can be used in Windows from that workstation.
